The Enhanced Border Security & Visa Entry Reform Act in the USA requires that anyone travelling to the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme to the USA must have a chip identifier in passports issued after 26th October 2006.

Travellers with Machine Readable Passports (UK red passports) will be able to continue to travel to the USA under the visa waiver programme if the passport was issued before 26th October 2005 until the passport expires.

People travelling to the USA with passports issued on or after 26th October 2006, which do not contain a chip will need to obtain a visa.

However, if you have a UK passport issued before 26th October 2005, you will still be able to travel to the USA under the visa waiver programme until your passport expires, provided that you have sufficient validity left on your passport anyway (6 months is required for the USA) and it is machine readable.

Passport issued 26 October 2005 through 25 October 2006

If your passport was issued or extended from October 26, 2005 through October 25, 2006, and has not expired, it may very well qualify for visa free travel until it expires. It does not necessarily need to be an "e-Passport" with an integrated computer chip.

For passports issued or extended in this date range, the requirements are:

  1. your passport is machine readable, and
  2. your passport contains at least one of the following two features:
    1. either a digital photograph, or
    2. an integrated computer chip.

A machine-readable passport has two lines of text as letters, numbers and chevrons (<<<<<) at the bottom of the personal information page, along with the bearer's picture:

Sample passport. The two machine-readable lines (MRP) are at the bottom and are highlighted.

A digital photo is one that is printed directly on the data page (as opposed to a photo that is glued or laminated into the passport.)

An e-Passport has an integrated computer chip that holds the same information printed on the passport's data page. These e-Passports comply with international technical standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can identify an e-Passport with the symbol below on the passport cover:
